Playing with Luscious

Good morning all! Its Rachel here today and I am bringing you a project today with a few different ways to use the pigment powders from Indigo Blu called Luscious. They are beautiful powders and have many uses - I'm bringing you just a few to wet your appetite. There are 11 colours but I have only chosen those in Autumnal shades to work with according to our theme this month!

I started with a journal spread, luscious powders and gesso. I started by mixing the white gesso with the powders and spread them over the pages using a palette knife.

The results were not brilliant - but I expected that! What I then did was to sprinkle some powders on top of the gesso whilst it was still wet - that result was better in showing up the pearly lustre.

Next I used the beautiful fossil stencil from Andy Skinner and added super thick slap it on through the mask. I sprinkled luscious powders on top and worked them in with the slap it on. I repeated this over the pages.

I think the result was beautiful - the shine is just wonderful.

Next I wanted to mix the powders with water and painted it on ...

Firstly the painting was just randomly in blobs...

here's a close up ...

finally I painted in some words ... personal ones as its in my journal.

I hope you have enjoyed my pages and seeing how the luscious powders work. I love them!

I hope you will join our challenge this month!

Hugs

Faux Rust Technique Tutorial

Hello, everyone!

Branka here and today is my turn to bring you an Inspirational post.
I like to use faux rust elements in my projects and there are so many tutorials out there about how to achieve the rust effect but the one I would like to share with you today is probably my favourite.  It's cheap, easy to do and quick technique with awesome results.

For this technique you would need:

- black gesso (black acrylic paint is optional)
I am using my Decoart media black gesso but you can use any brand you have

- Americana Decor chalky finish paint in Rustic (you can use any acrylic paint in brown tone but I found that this one works best for this technique)

- Golden Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold Open acrylic paint (you can use any Quinacridone gold paint you have)

- Cinnamon (ground cinnamon from the spice rack)

- something to protect your working surface

- a brush or a cosmetic sponge

- heat tool

This technique will work on any surface you want to rust. For this particular tutorial I am using a wooden cog from my stash.
First step is to put a coat of black gesso all over the item/s you'd like to rust.

Next step is to dab a layer of Rustic Americana decor paint or any other brown acrylic paint using your brush or a cosmetic sponge. Since, you want to imitate rust make sure to vary the intensity of the paint coverage.

While the paint is still wet, sprinkle a random layer of cinnamon over the surface. Gently tap the surface to press the powder into the wet paint, creating a good bond.

Allow this to dry (you can use your heat tool to speed up the process if you want) and then dab a small amount of the Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold (or any other Quinacridone Gold paint you have) over your sprinkled areas to mimic the rust effect.

Here is the final result:

It looks yummy, isn't it? And it smells yummy, too.

Here are some of the projects where I used this technique recently.

Rusted vintage baking tin mold.

Rusted corrugated cardboard butterfly.

Rusted filigree metal butterfly.

Rusted cardboard frame.

I hope I have inspired you to try this wonderful faux rust technique and to join in our 'The Colors Of Autumn' challenge at Stamps and Stencils!

Hugs! Branka xx

Welcome to today's Guest Designer, Avril !

Today we welcome Avril of Mrs B's Crafting Addiction as our Guest Designer. Avril was chosen by the DT as the winner of the Floral Frenzy challenge and was asked to join us for a day. So now let's move on to hear from Avril.

Hello, I am Avril (also known as Mrs B in blogland)  and I am absolutely delighted to have been invited to feature as Guest Designer here today.
I have always been interested in anything creative, I've knitted, sewn and even embroidered, but now my main interest is cardmaking.  I love nothing better than taking myself off to my little craft room and making a mess, in every respect!

I was given some Tyvek envelopes by a friend and not really being sure what to do with them I initially put one on my 'spray box'.  The leftover inks do take a while to air dry, but the accumulative results have a gorgeous sheen.  This piece had some Dylusions Dirty Martini and some Tarnished Brass stain.

I masked off part of the flourish stencil before applying Texture paste.  I knew that the stains would 'bleed' through and colour the paste, but that didn't bother me. I sprayed more stains to the top of the piece, using Abandoned Coral and a little more Tarnished Brass. (Sorry forgot to take a photo!)

I stamped the Butterfly where I wanted it on the card so that I had the antennae,  and then on another piece of Tyvek that had been sprayed with Abandoned Coral and glued to a piece of card, I stamped but butterfly again and fussy cut.  I gave the wings a little shape and then mounted it over the stamped butterfly, and stamped the No. 5 with  Black Archival ink.

I stamped the sentiment onto a lighter piece and then cut apart.  I matted  these onto black cardstock  to finish.

Thanks again for picking my card and for inviting me to join you as Guest Designer !

I'm sure you'll all agree that Avril's card is gorgeous and has provided even more inspiration for the current challenge which is Time to Take Flight which you still have plenty of time to join in with !

Dark and Moody Backgrounds Tutorial

Autumn of SewPaperPaint here with you today.  I don't know about you, but I have seen a rising trend in blogland that has thoroughly peeked my interest.  Dark and moody mixed media project seem to be all the rage!  I have experimented with numerous mediums to show you that you can try these techniques with whatever products you have on hand.

For this panel I used white texture paste through a dotty stencil, then splashed various Twinkling H2Os over it.  The white shows through these transparent watercolors.

For this panel I adhered various die cuts then painted it all with black gesso.  Next I dry brushed white gesso to add highlights, then went over it all with Radiant Pearls.  Again, the white shows through different than the black, creating beautiful depth.

For this panel I sponged several colors of Lumiere metallic paints, then embossed a stamped image repeatedly in black.

For this panel I first embossed the blob stamp in copper.  Next I used Versafine ink with a grid stamp and text stamp.  I lightly brushed PearlEx powder over the wet ink.

For this panel I splashed white gesso onto my panel then splashed Radiant Pearls over that, and came back in with splashes of Color Bloom spray.

For this panel I used white stencil paste and then splashed both Glimmer Mists and Color Bloom sprays over that.
For this panel I used a plastic card to scrape Lumiere paints onto my black panel, adding additional colors while the paint was wet for a beautiful blending.

My final panel was made by crinkling tissue paper onto a wet black gessoed panel.  I went back over the top of the tissue with more black gesso.  The highlights were created by lightly sponging Lumiere paint onto the raised areas of the tissue.

I created a pinnable image for you to pin this tutorial to your Pinterest boards.

I have turned each of these background panels into completed mixed media cards and will be sharing them on my personal blog for the next couple of weeks, so do pop by often.  But I won't leave you hanging and will share my basic design recipe as you see in this card.

First add something light and lacy to balance the dark, but still allow your beautiful background to show through.  Try lace or holey dies.  Next add some embellishments in a cluster.  You can use several flowers, or a combination of ribbon, sentiments, stamped images, etc.  Finally, add some more shimmer.  You can add  microbeads or chunky glitter, or sequins as I have.  Just experiment and remember to keep balance with your color and a strong focal area/image.  I'd love to hear your thoughts or tips on other ways to create dark backgrounds in the comments section below.  <3

Welcome to today's Guest Designer, Lula !

Today we are welcoming back Lula as our Guest Designer. Lula is not a stranger here at Stamps and Stencils and it's always a pleasure to share her fabulous work.

Hallo Everybody,I am thrilled to have been invited to guest design for Stamps and Stencils. Thanks bunches Ladies for this opportunity!

My name is Lucyna Marynowska, aka Lula. I come from the north of Poland. Fifty-seven, retired widow, mum of two grown up boys and a happy grandma. I started my crafting journey 4 years ago as a card maker and immediately became an addicted paper-lover. After my husband's death it was crafting what helped me to conquer the pain.  I enjoy creating anything from cards to altered art. I love to experiment with various types of mediums. I love challenges to spark my creativity and I making crafty friends all over the world makes me very happy. You can find my creative project on my blog: http://ululi.blogspot.com/

My take on the theme TIME TO TAKE FLIGHT is a butterfly sitting on altered  round, wooden box. I started with gluing some paper pieces which I have stamped before.  I have also inked all the edges.

Then I prepared the gypsum head with hair from wool, all covered with brown powertex. I added some beads in the hair too.

Now it was time for wings. I fussy cut  a butterfly, than decided to use only a part of it.

I stamped it, added some texture paste through the stencil and embellished it with some small chipboard butterflies.

It was later sprayed with some mists and painted with metal paint.

I arranged the butterfly on the top of my box, added some chipboards pieces, beads and the word,,dream''

I'm sure you'll all agree that Lula's project is fabulous ! You still have time to join in with the current challenge, Time to take flight, and Lula's project has provided you with lots more inspiration.
